At least the Ukrainians are safe from Malloy's astounding power to make things worse.

The same governor and legislature, who will boast of raising the minimum wage, jacked up the state's sales tax as part of a historic tax increase three years ago. They also lowered sales tax exemptions for items such as clothing, a change that falls disproportionately on the poor, as does the state's high gas tax.

The silences tell their own story. On Wednesday, when President Barack Obama made a ballyhooed speech in New Britain, he and Malloy didn't devote any time to those 2011 state tax increases that continue to penalize the poor for living in Connecticut. No mention either of the 3,900 jobs Connecticut lost in December. We could use another recovery summer.

When Sikorsky Aircraft Corp., based in Stratford, announced in late February that it would be shedding hundreds of jobs in Connecticut, Malloy was in Washington, D.C., devoting a chunk of his trip to raising money for the Democratic Governors Association. He was silent on the bad news.

Malloy, you will be happy to know, is paying attention to events in other parts of the world. The governor issued a statement of solidarity with the people of Ukraine last week. The snarler-in-chief will do as much about that crisis as he has for youth unemployment in Connecticut's cities. At least the Ukrainians are safe from Malloy's astounding power to make things worse.
